DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken Softball team lost both games of the doubleheader to No. 3 North Georgia. The Pacers dropped game one with a score of 8-1 and game two with a score of 4-0.
The Pacers are now 5-15 on the season, including 2-4 in conference play.
In game one, head coach
Jaclin Poole's team was down early when the Nighthawks put one on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first.
The Pacers tied the game in the top of the fourth when
Skylar Morley singled up the middle driving in
Emily Ayers.
UNG struck back in the bottom of the fourth inning adding five runs and taking the 6-1 lead. The Nighthawks added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth, which would represent the final scores of the game.
Payton Baker lasted the distance pitching six innings giving up eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Baker is now 2-7 on the year.
For the game,
Mallory Shaver had two hits while Morley,
Jessica Stanley and
Lauren Wexler each had one. Morley drove in a run and Ayers scored the team's lone run.
In game two Poole's team was unable to get anything across home plate despite hits by
Shi Cain, Shaver,
Taylor Butts and Morley.
Despite trailing 4-0 in the top of the seventh, USC Aiken continued to battle. Cain got things going with a base knock to left field. Shaver ripped a single up the middle to put two runners on. Morley recorded a base hit to the pitcher to load the bags. However, three straight out ended the contest.
Lakyn Phillips got the start in the circle pitching three innings giving up three runs on six hits. In relief, Baker also pitched three innings giving up one run on three hits and a strikeout.
The Pacers return to action on Monday, March 6 for a doubleheader against Mars Hill starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
