USC Aiken Takes The Series Over Georgia College & State With 5-1 Win

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team clinched the series victory after posting a 5-1 win over Georgia College & State Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 12-18 on the season, including 6-6 in PBC play.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first frame on an unearned run. The squad threatened in the bottom of the frame but could not even the score. Jessica Stanley reached on a single but was erased on a fielder's choice. Emily Ayers also reached on a fielder's choice and Shi Can was hit by a pitch but a strikeout ended the frame.

On a 2-2 pitch in the bottom of the fourth, Cain blasted her second round-tripper of the series. She sent the pitch screaming over the left center field wall, knotting the score at 1-1.

Mallory Shaver singled to left and Jakayla McKelvey came in as a pinch runner. Two batters later, Holly Daum reached on a fielder's choice, erasing McKelvey. Taylor Butts reached on an error, pushing Daum to second base. Kadence Adams came in as a pinch hitter and promptly ripped a double to left field, scoring Daum for a 2-1 lead.

Still up 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Ella Stone beat out a slow roller for an infield hit with two out. Stanley drew a walk before the Bobcats made a pitching change. Lauren Wexler recorded a full-count single to center field, plating Stone.

Grace Ann Thompkins came in as a pinch runner for Stanley and scored on a base hit by Ayers. Cain pushed the score to 5-1 when she rocketed a single to left field, scoring Wexler.

For the game, Cain had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Stone also had two hits and scored once.

Lakyn Phillips worked 4.2 innings to pick up the win. She struck out three batters and gave up on unearned run.

Payton Baker came in with the bases full and promptly forced a fly ball. In similar fashion to the series opener, Skylar Morley made a sensational play for the final out of the inning. Baker finished off the Bobcats, throwing 2.1 innings for the save.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they host Benedict in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
