USC Aiken Drops Series Finale To Young Harris

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a 5-1 decision to Young Harris Sunday afternoon in the series finale.

The Pacers clinched the series with the doubleheader sweep Saturday.

USC Aiken is now 5-12 overall, including 2-1 in PBC play.

The Mountain Lions plated a run in the first and second for a 2-0 advantage. Head coach Jaclin Poole's team sliced the deficit to just one in the bottom of the frame.

With two down, Holly Daum singled and swiped second base. After a walk to Taylor Butts, Ella Stone ripped a single to right field, plating Daum. However, USC Aiken was unable to knot the score.

The Mountain Lions took a 4-1 lead with two runs in the third stanza. The Pacers looked like they would cut into the margin once again. Lauren Wexler led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before Emily Ayers reached on a fielder's choice, erasing Wexler at second base. A groundout by Shi Cain put Ayers at second. Kadence Adams and Mallory Shaver each earned walks, loading the bags. A pop-up ended the threat.

In the fourth, Daum belted a double to the gap in right center field to lead things off. A bunt from Butts pushed Daum to third, but back-to-back outs ended the inning.

YHC added an insurance run in the sixth. The Pacers tried to mount a comeback, putting runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, but the team was unable to plate another run.

Daum led the way with a three-for-three day while scoring a run. Cain had two hits in the game. Adams, Ayers, Stone and Wexler each had a hit while Stone drove in the team's lone run.

In the circle, Lakyn Phillips took the loss. She had a strikeout in 1.1 innings. Payton Baker came on in relief and had three strikeouts.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they play at No. 3 North Georgia in a three-game series beginning at 4 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
