AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a hard-fought 7-6 game to Embry-Riddle Sunday afternoon in the series finale.
The Pacers are now 9-4 on the season.
Trailing 5-0 in the early going, head coach
Michael Holder's team was unable to get anything going until the eighth frame.
Joseph Mozingo led off the frame by being hit with the first pitch. A groundout pushed him to second base before
Josh Sharp's base knock to left field allowed him to go to third. A
Jackson Hannon sacrifice fly made it 5-1.
The visitors scored a run in the ninth inning for a 6-1 advantage. Down to their final three outs, the Pacers put on a show with a five-run frame, tying it at 6-6.
Luke Parker got things started with a single up the middle.
Nick Tripp's base knock to right field put two runners on base.
Jose Hernandez came in as a pinch hitter and delivered a single to left field, loading the bags.
Marcus Mastellone doubled down the left field line, plating Parker and Tripp to make it 6-3. After a pitching change, Mozingo stepped into the box for the second time in the inning and promptly rocketed a double to right center field, pulling the home team within one at 6-5 as Hernandez and Mastellone scored on the play.
Tai Gilbert came in as a pinch runner for Mozingo. Two batters later, he moved to third on a passed ball. A fielder's choice allowed Gilbert to cross home, knotting the score at 6-6. Sharp, who reached on a fielder's choice when Gilbert scored, swiped second with two down. He hustled to third on an error, but was left stranded.
The visitors managed to score what turned out to be the game-winning run in the 10
th. Holder's team continued to battle in the bottom of the frame.
Bryce Toci singled and
Bryce Bulls came in as a pinch runner. He promptly went to third on a Mastellone single with two away. Although Mastellone stole second to put the potential game-winning run in scoring position, USC Aiken was unable to push across the tying or go-ahead run.
For the game, Mastellone led the way with three hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Mozingo tallied a double, two RBI and scored a run. Sharp had a pair of hits and one RBI.
James Eckert, Hannon, Parker and
Nick Tripp also posted hits in the game. Hannon had the sacrifice fly RBI while Hernandez, Mozingo, Parker and Tripp all scored a run.
Jacob Fletcher worked five innings and had five strikeouts.
Louie Smith tossed two frames with a pair of strikeouts.
Jacob Bodkin struck out three batters in his inning of work while
Justin Byrd had a strikeout in one inning on the mound.
Dylan Wilhelm struck out one in the loss.
