Malone And Trushel Post Double-Double Efforts In Win At Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga.Annalise Malone and Emily Trushel each had a double-double as the University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team recorded a 66-52 win at Columbus State Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 17-10 overall, including 11-6 in league play.

In addition to the double-double efforts, USC Aiken posted a Division II school record with 63 rebounds, besting the previous mark of 60 against Winston-Salem State on Jan. 1, 2020.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Emily Trushel's game-high 26 points. She added a game-best 12 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. Emily Trushel hit eight-of-15 from the floor, including a four-of-eight effort from downtown. She also added three assists and a block.

Malone added 19 points on nine-of-12 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds in the victory.

Breanna Gustave snagged nine rebounds and had a block while Hailey Unger collected eight boards while dishing out four assists. Delaney Trushel chipped in four boards and a block. Jentri Worly amassed seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Down 20-12 after the first quarter, USC Aiken clamped down on the defensive side of the ball. The Pacers outscored the home team 15-7 during the second frame. The seven points allowed marked the seventh fewest given up by a USC Aiken squad in the second quarter in school history.

Worley started the scoring in the second period with a lay-up off a pass from Emily Trushel. With 7:03 to play, Unger connected with Emily Trushel for a three-ball. Trailing 27-21, Unger hit a floater, pulling the team within four. Delaney Trushel nailed a jumper with 1:52 to play before Kelsie Woodard's lay-up knotted the contest prior to intermission.

USC Aiken took a 29-27 lead when Worley hit Malone for an inside bucket to start the third quarter. Emily Trushel's free throws at the 8:12 mark gave the visitors a lead they would not relinquish. It also started a 10-0 run. Malone netted four points during the spurt while Gustave canned her first two points of the game. Emily Trushel's lay-up off a pass from Gustave made it 39-29 at the 5:02 mark.

Leading 42-40, Marta Rivera found Malone for a lay-up. Rivera's bucket off a pass from Madison Williams made it 46-41 heading into the final quarter.

The Pacers started the final 10-minute frame with an 11-0 spurt. Emily Trushel hit a jumper before Malone netted the next nine points for a 57-41 advantage with 5:56 to play as USC Aiken's defense kept the game at a double-digit margin the rest of the way.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 27-of-61 from the floor (44.3 percent) and made eight-of-12 from the foul line (66.7 percent). Miller's team out-rebounded the home squad 63-32, including a 47-21 edge on the defensive glass. The Pacers dished out 19 assists in the game and registered three blocks. USC Aiken controlled the paint, outscoring the Cougars 42-24.  

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they host North Georgia on Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
