AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team used a career-high effort of 29 points from
Hailey Unger to knock off Mount Olive 70-60 Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 4-6 on the season.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by Unger's 29-point effort. She added five rebounds and four steals in the win.
Jentri Worley added 15 points and nine boards.
Jaya Nelson and
Paris Webster tallied seven points apiece while
Marta Rivera accounted for six points and seven boards.
Rhiannon Saller totaled four points while
Alivia Hikel chipped in two.
Kelsie Woodard blocked three shots while Unger had two blocks.
USC Aiken jumped out to an early 7-3 lead after buckets from Saller and Unger at the 7:27 mark. The Pacers were up by one before Worley drained a pair of free throws to push the score to 10-7. Down by two, Worley found Unger for an inside basket at the 4:19 mark. UMO held an 18-14 advantage but Rivera connected with Unger for a long-distance shot, pulling the home team within one at 18-17. The Trojans made a lay-up in the waning seconds of the period for a 20-17 advantage.
Miller's team trailed 26-17 with 6:23 to go in the half but Unger rattled off five straight points to pull the team within four at 26-22. With under four minutes to go, Worley hit a free throw as did Rivera. At the 1:20 mark, Hikel nailed a floater in the lane to knot the score but the visitors netted the final four points of the half for a 30-26 edge at the break.
Down by five, 41-36, Nelson drained a jumper. On the ensuing possession, Webster drilled a runner in the lane to make it 41-40. With 2:27 to go in the third, Webster found Nelson for a three-ball, giving the home team a 43-41 edge. Tied at 43-43, Unger canned a shot off a pass from Webster. Leading 45-44, Rivera connected on a basket with 16 seconds to play for a 47-44 lead going into the final quarter.
Leading by two, Unger buried a jumper with 5:36 to go. She then hit two free throws and made a lay-up for an eight-point edge. The visitors pulled within six but Worley canned a three-ball at the 1:26 mark. UMO got within six with 33 seconds to go but Unger hit four free throws and Worley made two for a 70-58 margin with seven ticks remaining.
For the game, USC Aiken drilled 22-of-53 from the floor (41.5 percent). The team drilled 21-of-28 from the charity stripe and maintained a 44-31 edge on the glass. The squad dished out 11 assists and had eight steals.
