USC Aiken Upends No. 19 North Georgia, 77-74

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted a huge road win over No. 19 North Georgia Saturday afternoon 77-74.

The Pacers are now 12-8 on the season, including 6-4 in league play. The Nighthawks fall to 14-5 on the year and 6-4 against PBC teams.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Emily Trushel's team-high 23 points on eight-of-13 shooting from the floor. She also snagged a game-best eight rebounds and shared game-high honors with four steals.

Jentri Worley poured in 20 points and tallied a game-best five assists. Rookie Hailey Unger totaled 15 points, four assists and four steals in the win.

Kelsie Woodard chipped in eight points and five rebounds while Delaney Trushel notched six points, six rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist.

Breanna Gustave accounted for four points and four rebounds.

In the first quarter, USC Aiken trailed 1409 before Unger made an inside shot with 2:47 to play. Almost a minute later, Unger found Delaney Trushel for a jumper. Gustave's lay-up propelled the Pacers in front, 15-14, Worley's bucket with seven seconds to play increased the margin to 17-14 going into the second quarter.

Tied at 19-19 with just under six minutes to go in the half, Worley made a lay-up. With 4:57 to play, Unger connected with Emily Trushel for a three-ball. Leading 26-22, Worley drained one from distance while Emily Trushel was credited with the assist. Unger's lay-up pushed the score to 31-22 in favor of the visitors. UNG pulled within one at 33-32 but Worley hit a three-point bucket with 39 seconds to go as the Pacers maintained a 36-34 lead at the break. 

A huge third quarter helped the Pacers take a 12-point lead going into the final stanza. Worley started the third period off with a lay-up but UNG managed to take a 40-39 edge. Unger's jumper put the visitors in front, 41-40. Leading 44-42, Unger and Woodard hit back-to-back baskets.

With the score at 54-47, Worley found Unger for a three-point basket with 37 ticks remaining in the frame. After a defensive board by Gustave, she finished the quarter with a lay-up for a 49-47 edge going into the fourth.

An early bucket by Unger gave the Pacers a 61-47 lead. The Nighthawks cut it to just two with 6:20 to play, but Emily Trushel and Worley answered the call with back-to-back baskets.

UNG's three-point bucket tied the score at 71-71 with 1:31 to play. Worley responded with a jumper 17 seconds later. Tied at 73-73, Woodard was fouled and she calmly hit two charity tosses with 38 seconds remaining. Leading 75-74, Emily Trushel recorded a steal and lay-up while Delaney Trushel was credited with an assist with 11 seconds to play. A strong defensive stand by Miller's team did not allow the Nighthawks to get off a shot in the final 11 seconds, sealing the victory.

For the game, Miller's team connected on 31-of-61 from the floor 50.8 percent), including seven-of-12 from downtown (58.3 percent). The squad hit eight-of-13 from the charity stripe.

The 12 offensive rebounds led to 18 second-chance points. The squad accounted for 32 points in the paint and picked up 12 points off turnovers.
