Great Effort Comes Up Short In PBC Tournament

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a pair of games to No. 2 Georgia College Sunday in the best-of-three portion of the PBC Tournament.

USC Aiken lost by scores of 8-3 and 4-3. The team concludes the 2022 campaign at 21-29.  

In the first game of the day, the Bobcats scored four runs in the second frame. Head coach Michael Holder's team battled back in the fifth, slicing the deficit to two.

With one down in the top of the fifth, Sean McQuillan ripped a single through the right side of the infield. He moved to second when Jeff Cyr was hit by a pitch. A single by Jackson Hannon loaded the bags. Two batters later, Josh Sharp roped a base knock to right field that drove in two. With two on base, a groundout ended the threat.

Georgia College bounced back with a three-run fifth in its next at bat and added a run in the sixth for an 8-2 margin.

In the seventh, USC Aiken got a run back. McQuillan started things when he was hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Three batters later, Nick Tripp belted a single to center field, making the score 8-3. However, the Pacers could get no closer.

For the game, Hannon led the way with three hits. Tripp had two hits and drove in one. McQuillan scored twice while Sharp knocked in a pair of runs.  

Jacob Fletcher took the loss. Austin Hohm, Jacob Rye, Dylan Wilhelm and Peyton Boozer all saw time on the mound. The staff combined to post seven strikeouts.

The win by the Bobcats forced a winner-take-all game three.

GC scored a run in the second but Holder's team knotted it in the third frame. Kaden Blankenship led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. Two batters later, McQuillan drove him in with a hit to left field.

The Pacers knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth. Scott Huntley notched a single down the left field line. He swiftly stole second and moved to third on a fly ball. Carson Suess doubled him home, tying the game.

The Bobcats pulled in front with a two-run sixth inning, but USC Aiken tied it in the eighth. McQuillan was the catalyst once again, singling to lead things off. Cyr ripped a single through the left side to put runners on the corners. Hannon's fielder's choice allowed McQuillan to cross home.

Georgia College managed to score a run in the eighth and keep USC Aiken off the board in the ninth, securing the game.

For the contest, Huntley and McQuillan had two hits apiece. McQuillan, Hannon and Suess all drove in a run. McQuillan, Huntley and Blankenship all crossed home plate in the game.

On the mound, Luke Parker got the start and worked five innings. He struck out three. Austin Sandifer, Louie Smith and Austin Hohm worked a frame apiece.
