AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of games to Columbus State Saturday by scores of 1-0 and 5-0.
The Pacers are now 29-20 on the season, including 11-12 in league play.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team played outstanding defense in the opener, shutting down the Cougars through the first six innings.
With the bases loaded in the first frame,
Lakyn Phillips picked up a strikeout and forced a pop-up to
Brooke Moore to end the stanza. With the Cougars having a runner on third and only one out in the second, Phillips registered back-to-back swinging strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.
The visitors threatened in the third, but the rare double play from
Brianna Dow to
Mallory Shaver to
Taylor Butts enabled USC Aiken to get the first two outs. Phillips picked up the third out via a swinging strikeout.
Shaver singled in the bottom of the third and
Courtney Leisner came in as a pinch runner.
Holly Daum and Butts each laid down sacrifice bunts, but a pop-up ended the inning with Leisner on third.
Emily Ayers ended the fifth when she threw a dart to Moore and she applied the tag on a Cougar trying to steal a base. In the bottom of the fifth,
Skylar Morley reached on an error but she was left stranded at second base.
CSU broke through with a run in the top of the seventh but Poole's team had a chance in the last of the frame. Moore singled to the shortstop and moved to second on Morley's base knock to left field.
Ashlyn White laid down a sacrifice bunt to put the winning run on second. However, back-to-back outs ended the game.
Dow, Moore, Morley and Shaver had hits in the opener. Phillips gave up one run and struck out nine in the loss.
CSU plated a run in the third and fourth of game two for a 2-0 edge. Butts was left stranded at second in the third after a double. White singled with one away in the fifth and moved to second on a wild pitch, but back-to-back outs ended the threat.
The Cougars scored three runs in the sixth for the 5-0 margin.
In the nightcap, Butts posted a double and White had the team's other hit.
Payton Baker took the loss and had three strikeouts in the game.
