USC Aiken Drops Contest To North Georgia

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost an 11-inning contest to North Georgia Saturday by a score of 6-5.

The Pacers are now 19-23 on the season, including 11-12 in league play.

In the bottom of the first inning, Sean McQuillan walked. Two batters later, Jeff Cyr was hit by a pitch. Both were able to trot home when Jackson Hannon unleashed a three-run home run over the left field fence for a 3-0 edge.

Head coach Michael Holder's team increased the margin to 4-0 with a run in the second stanza. Joseph Mozingo led off the frame with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a wild pitch, he came home on Tyler Littlefield's groundout.

UNG rattled off five straight runs for a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth. However, Holder's squad quickly battled back. McQuillan earned a walk and after numerous throws to first by the pitcher, an errant attempt allowed him to race to third. Cyr laid down a bunt for a hit. On the play, McQuillan hustled home, knotting the score at 5-5.

The score remained tied through eight innings despite both teams having opportunities to take the lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Littlefield beat out a bouncer to second base for a hit. McQuillan bunted him to second on a sacrifice. With the count full, Nick Tripp fouled off a pitch before taking ball four on an off-speed pitch that remained high above the zone to put runners on first and second. However, the Nighthawks were able to get out of the jam.

UNG had runners on first and third in the 11th. The visitors laid down a bunt that pushed a run across for a 6-5 lead, which turned out to be the game-winning run.

The Pacers had runners on base in the bottom of the frame, but the team was unable to push across the tying run.

For the game, Hannon led the way with a pair of hits and three RBI. Cyr and Littlefield each drove in a run. McQuillan crossed home twice.

Five USC Aiken pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts. Louie Smith struck out four but was saddled with the loss. Joel Haney and Austin Hohm each had three strikeouts. Dylan Wilhelm and Austin Sandifer each saw time on the mound in the game.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the final game of the series starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the seniors will be honored. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
