AIKEN, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept a doubleheader against Mars Hill Sunday.
After winning the first game 15-7 in six innings, head coach
Jaclin Poole's team was able to secure another win by a score of 4-3.
The Pacers are now 21-16 overall.
In game one, USC Aiken got on the board when
Brianna Dow doubled home
Lauren Wexler, who led off the inning with a double.
Emily Ayers hit a home run to the left field, plating Dow for a 3-0 advantage.
The Pacers pushed across five runs in the second to make it 8-1. Dow's infield single scored
Holly Daum, who led off the inning with a single before swiping second. Ayers' single drove in
Taylor Butts, who was hit by a pitch.
Jena Dewalt reached on an error that scored Dow and Ayers, making it 7-1.
Brooke Moore's single scored Dewalt for the seven-run edge.
Dow's solo home run in the third extended the advantage to 9-2. Leading 9-5 in the fourth, Moore crushed a home run, making it 10-5. In the fifth frame, Ayers singled home Wexler, who reached earlier on an infield single.
Mars Hill cut into the advantage in the sixth with a pair of runs, but Poole's team ended the game with the mercy rule in the bottom of the frame. Moore doubled and moved to third on
Skylar Morley's single.
Holly Daum singled in Moore to make it 12-7.
Taylor Butts recorded an infield single that scored Morley. With runners on second and third, Wexler ended the game with a two-RBI single for the eight-run win.
For the game, Ayers led the way with four RBI on three hits while scoring two runs. Dow posted a game-high four hits, drove in three and scored three times. Moore and Wexler had three hits apiece. The dyad drove in two apiece and each scored twice. Daum had two hits, drove in one and scored twice. Morley notched two hits and scored once. Butts had one RBI and crossed home twice. Dewalt scored once.
In the circle,
Payton Baker got the win while pitching 5.1 innings. She registered six strikeouts in the victory.
Game two was much closer. Poole's team got out in front with a two-run shot from
Shircoria Bosket in the second inning.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, Dow doubled to left. Two batters later,
Mallory Shaver knocked her in with a base hit to center field.
USC Aiken extended the margin to 4-2 with a run in the fourth when Bosket belted another round-tripper.
MHU closed the gap with a run in the sixth, but
Lakyn Phillips forced a groundout to end the inning before retiring the side in order in the seventh for the 4-3 win.
For the game, Bosket led the way with two hits and three RBI. Shaver had one hit and drove in one. Dow and Morley each had a hit and both crossed home plate once.
Tara McGee and
Ashlyn White picked up hits in the win.
Phillips went the distance for the win. She struck out eight and gave up three runs on three hits.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Claflin for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
