AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team broke open a close game with a five-run ninth inning en route to a 7-0 win at Georgia Southwestern Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers improve to 7-9 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
Scott Huntley got things going with a run in the fifth inning when he trotted across the plate on a passed ball, giving the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The score remained the same until
Sean McQuillan's base hit to right field scored Huntley in the eighth inning.
Leading 2-0 with
Joel Haney dealing an outstanding game on the mound, interim head coach
Michael Holder's team gave him some insurance runs with five runs in the ninth inning.
Jeff Cyr led off the frame with a single to left and moved to third on a
Nick Tripp double.
Josh Sharp plated both runners with a single up the middle for a 4-0 margin.
Moments later, McQuillan's single up the middle plated Sharp and
Carson Suess to push the lead to 6-0.
Jackson Hannon completed the scoring with an infield single that scored Huntley.
Haney recorded the complete-game shutout. He struck out seven batters and walked just one while giving up five hits. The complete game took him a mere 103 pitches.
For the game, McQuillan led the team with three hits and three RBI. Sharp had two hits and two RBI. Cyr accounted for a pair of hits in the win.
