Sharp Drives In Two At No. 13 Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team came up just short at No. 13 Newberry, falling 3-2 in a Tuesday evening clash.

The Pacers are now 10-16 on the season while the Wolves improve to 25-4.

In the top of the first, Sean McQuillan saw a pair of strikes to lead off the game before promptly ripping a single to left. With two down, Jose Hernandez belted a hit through the left side of the infield, but a fielder's choice ended the threat.

The Wolves managed to plate a run in the first and second frames for a 2-0 edge. The home team tacked on a run in the fourth, but both pitching staffs continued to be strong.

USC Aiken picked up its third hit of the contest in the eighth. With two down, Carson Suess liked the first pitch he saw and registered a base knock up the middle into center field. Dalton Graves came in as a pinch hitter and responded in fine fashion. On the ninth pitch of the at bat, he garnered a single down the left field line. However, Suess was thrown out trying to take third, ending the inning.

In the top of the ninth, McQuillan recorded a lead-off bunt on the first pitch he saw. Three pitches later, Josh Sharp blasted an offering over the right field fence, pulling the visitors within one at 3-2, but that was as close as the team would get.

For the game, USC Aiken rattled off two runs on six hits – with both runs coming off the bat of Sharp. McQuillan had a pair of hits in the game.

On the mound, Dylan Wilhelm got the start and gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out one while tossing two frames. AJ Deibel worked the final six innings of relief. He struck out two and gave up one run on four hits. Deibel walked just one.

The Pacers return to action Friday when they play at Flagler at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
