YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of games at Young Harris Sunday by scores of 6-1 and 1-0.
The Pacers are now 17-12 on the season and 4-5 in league play.
Head coach
Jaclin Poole's team took a 1-0 lead in the first game. In the top of the fourth,
Lauren Wexler reached on a throwing error. She promptly moved to second on a groundout. Wexler hustled to third on a wild pitch before coming home on another groundout.
YHC tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, making it 1-1.
USC Aiken put the go-ahead run on in the top of the sixth when
Taylor Butts reached on a miscue, but she was left stranded. The Mountain Lions plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth and the visitors were unable to get on the board in the seventh as
Mallory Shaver had the lone hit.
In the nightcap, Wexler led off the game with a base knock to center field. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but back-to-back line drive outs ended the stanza.
YHC plated what turned out to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the first.
With two out in the second,
Jena Dewalt reached on an error and swiped second, but a groundout left her stranded. The Pacers got things going in the fourth. Shaver led off with a single.
Courtney Leisner came in as a pinch runner and moved to second on an error. However, back-to-back outs ended the threat.
USC Aiken loaded the bags in the sixth. Shaver led off and ripped a single to left, but was erased when
Emily Ayers reached on a fielder's choice.
Skylar Morley recorded an infield single while Ayers hustled to second.
Brooke Moore roped a single to center field, putting runners at every base. However, back-to-back outs left everyone stranded.
Poole's team had a chance to tie it in the seventh.
Ashlyn White came in as a pinch hitter and registered a single to left field. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Wexler.
Brianna Dow's base hit pushed her to third. However, the visitors were unable to plate the tying run.
