AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team put forth a tremendous comeback effort that fell just short in the 71-70 loss to Columbus State.
The Pacers are now 17-10 on the season, including 11-6 in league play.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Tyler Johnson's team-high 21 points. He added five rebounds, two steals and a block.
David Strother connected for 16 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards.
Tehree Horn accounted for nine points, six rebounds and a block while
LaTreavin Black and
Jalen McCoy had eight points apiece.
Demitrios Dixon added six points while
Samba Ndiaye chipped in two.
Trailing 32-19 with 5:16 to play in the first half, a three-ball from Johnson made it an eight-point game. Down 39-30, Johnson hit a free throw and Strother added a pair, pulling the home team within six at the break.
USC Aiken trailed 62-50 with 9:02 to go, but Horn got going with a jumper. Down by 12, Horn netted five straight points, making it a seven-point game with 6:11 to go, 64-57. Horn then found Johnson for a shot from downtown. Johnson registered an old-fashioned three-point play, pulling the Pacers within one. After a time-out, Strother completed the 13-0 spurt with a jumper in the lane for a 65-64 advantage.
The Pacers saw the Cougars net four straight points before Strother answered with two free throws with 38 ticks remaining. Forced to foul after CSU got an offensive rebound, the visitors made two free throws with four seconds on the clock. Strother nailed a three-point bucket at the buzzer for the final margin.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 26-of-71 from the floor (36.6 percent), including nine-of-21 from downtown (42.9 percent). The squad buried nine-of-12 from the foul line (75.0 percent). Vanderslice's squad controlled the paint, 32-22. USC Aiken's 19 offensive rebounds led to 18 second-chance points.
