USC Aiken Sweeps Clarion

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team notched a pair of wins Friday, defeating Clarion 6-0 and 3-2.

The Pacers are now 4-2 on the season.

Head coach Jaclin Poole's team jumped on top with a run in the first. Jena Dewalt singled and swiped second. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Emily Ayers belted a single to left for the 1-0 lead.

It remained 1-0 until the fourth inning. Brianna Dow ripped a double down the left field line that scored Holly Daum, who singled to center field earlier in the frame. Mallory Shaver increased the margin of 4-0 with a two-run round-tripper to straight-away center field.

Poole's team made it 6-0 with two runs in the fifth. Brooke Moore doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Daum's single pushed the score to 5-0. Courtney Leisner's double to the gap in left center plated Daum for a 6-0 advantage.  

In the circle, Rebekah Cook tossed a complete game to get the win. She struck out one batter and gave up just two hits in the dominating victory.

For the game, Daum led the way with three hits while Ayers and Dow had two base knocks apiece. Shaver drove in two while Daum scored twice.

Poole's squad got going in the bottom of the first. When Shaver reached on an error, Dewalt scored from third for a 1-0 edge.

USC Aiken made it 2-0 with a run in the second. Dow ripped a 1-1 pitch to center field, plating Daum, who had reached on a lead-off walk. In the third, Moore belted a double to left center field on the first pitch she saw with one down. Four pitches later, Skylar Morley laid down a bunt toward the shortstop. With Moore moving to third on the pitch and the defense out of position, Moore hustled from second to home plate for a three-run advantage.

Clarion scored a run in the fifth and sixth to make it 3-2.

For the game, Dow and Moore each wrapped out two hits. Lakyn Phillips and Moore each notched doubles. Dow, Morley and Shaver each notched one RBI. Daum, Dewalt and Moore each crossed home plate.

Philips worked a complete game. She struck out nine batters and gave up two hits with one earned run.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they host UNC Pembroke in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
