ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak to Flagler with a 3-2 win on the final day of the regular season Sunday afternoon.
The Pacers improve to 17-12 on the season, including 6-9 in league play. The Saints fall to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in the PBC.
Emily Lammers led the offense with 23 kills while hitting .405. She also chipped in eight digs and three blocks.
Anna Sommer garnered a career-high 18 kills while hitting .533.
Kaitlyn Rodriguez accounted for 12 kills and 10 digs for a double-double.
Sadie McKay chipped in six kills and seven digs while
Brooke Wroten tallied four kills.
Mallory Barash dished out a career-high 52 assists to go along with 15 digs for a double-double. At the service line, Barash, Rodriguez and
Izabella De Lima each had two aces.
Keri Mercer totaled 13 digs. Rodriguez and Wroten also had three blocks apiece in the victory.
A 5-1 run gave head coach
Glenn Cox's team a 12-4 lead in the first set. During the run, Sommer slammed home four kills while Rodriguez had an ace. A 4-1 spurt by the Saints made it 22-19 but Lammers and Wroten stuffed an attempt for a point. Lammers and Rodriguez each garnered kills for the 25-20 win.
After dropping the next two sets, the Pacers put together an outstanding fourth set. Leading 10-9, Lammers took a pass from Barash and found the court. Moments later,
Kaitlyn Lund and Rodriguez combined for a block. A time-out by the Saints did not slow down the potent offense. Rodriguez, Lammers and Lund combined for back-to-back-to-back kills, forcing another time-out. Lammers powered home a pass from Mercer for a 19-9 lead. Up 19-11, Lammers started a 6-0 run to end the set. Lammers, Rodriguez and Sommer had kills in the run before Rodriguez and Sommer recorded a block to end the frame.
In the fifth set, Cox's group went up 9-7 after a kill from McKay and an ace by Barash. A 4-1 run by the Saints knotted the stanza at 13-13. A time-out by Cox allowed the squad to gather themselves and set up Rodriguez, who hammered home a pass from Barash. A time-out by the Saints did not help their cause as an attack error by the home squad ended the match at 15-13.
The Pacers open postseason play Thursday against No. 4 Georgia College & State in the first round of the PBC Tournament. The match will be played at Augusta. Match time will be announced Monday by the league office.
