Three Net Double Figures Against No. 9 Carson-Newman

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team placed three student-athletes in double figures in the 75-57 loss to No. 9 Carson-Newman Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 0-2 on the season while the Eagles improve to 2-0.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Jentri Worley's 16 points and three boards. Hailey Unger netted 13 points to go along with three rebounds while Emily Trushel added 11 points, three assists and three rebounds.

Breanna Gustave connected for nine markers. She added four rebounds and a steal. Annalise Malone secured seven boards.

Trailing 7-2 in the opening moments, Worley took a pass from Emily Trushel and buried a three-ball. Emily Trushel hauled in a pass from Unger and connected for a bucket, knotting the score at 7-7.

Down 12-9, Unger hit a jumper. Moments later, Gustave found Delaney Trushel for a three-point shot in transition, giving the Pacers a 14-12 lead. Up 17-15, Gustave hit Unger for a shot from downtown. With 1:28 to play in the first quarter, Gustave hit both free throws for a 22-15 lead. After a free throw by Yasmine Fairchild, Gustave hit a jumper with 13 ticks left on the clock for a 25-15 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Eagles embarked on an 8-0 run midway through the second period, closing the margin to two, 32-30. However, Worley answered the bell with a three-ball. Leading 35-32, Unger canned a three-point shot for a 38-32 lead at the break.

Carson-Newman went on a 21-5 run to start the third quarter but Emil Trushel connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a seven-point game. On the ensuing possession, Worley's three-ball cut the deficit to six, 55-49.

Although the Eagles extended the advantage to double figures, USC Aiken continued to battle. The Pacers pulled within seven points in the fourth quarter on a free throw from Malone, 59-52, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.

For the game, Miller's squad hit 18-of-55 from the floor (32.7 percent), including a sizzling 10-of-22 from downtown (45.5 percent). The squad connected on 11-of-15 from the charity stripe (73.3 percent). The team dished out assists on 11 of 18 made field goals.

USC Aiken accounted for 17 points off the bench. The team also tallied 10 fast break points.
