USC Aiken Drops Four-Set Match To Flagler

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision to Flagler Saturday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 5-3 on the season.

Alie Smith led the way with a 19-kill, 20-dig performance. For good measure, she added three total blocks. Kaitlyn Rodriguez accounted for nine kills while Sydney Bresee and Alisha Pitt had eight kills apiece. 

Caroline Foster notched a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs. 

Defensively, Kari Mercer garnered 29 digs while Kayla Duggan accounted for 19. Emily Duggan chipped in 10 digs. At the net, Pitt led the way with five blocks. Bresee had four while Foster and Rodriguez each had three block assists. 

USC Aiken jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. Smith started things off with a kill. Foster and Bresee combined for a block. Bresee notched a kill while Emily Duggan served up an ace for the 5-0 advantage. Leading 14-10, Smith registered a block and a Flagler miscue made it 16-10. After the Saints pulled within three at 20-17, an error by the Saints and a block from Bresee and Rodriguez made it 22-17. Up 23-18, Rodriguez and Smith found the court for back-to-back kills and a 25-18 win.

The Pacers led 6-1 in the second set as Smith and Pitt had two kills apiece. Up 10-7, USC Aiken saw the visitors embark on a 5-0 spurt for a two-point lead. The Pacers regained the advantage after Smith and Rodriguez posted kills and the Saints made an error (16-15). However, Flagler took a 23-18 lead en route to the 25-21 win.

The Saints never fell behind in the third set and won 25-21.

In the fourth set, USC Aiken held an 11-5 lead after going on a 5-0 spurt. Anita Cookey-Gam had a kill to get things started. Three errors by the Saints and a kill from Bresee made it a six-point advantage. The home squad pushed it to 19-15 on another kill from Cookey-Gam. Head coach Glenn Cox's team led 22-20 before Bresee put away a pass from Foster. However, the Saints rattled off five straight points for the win.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they host Francis Marion at 6 p.m.
