AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of hard-fought games to Flagler Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 0-6 on the season, including 0-4 in league play.
Down 4-0 in the fifth inning of game one, head coach
Jaclin Poole's team put together a tremendous rally, knotting the contest.
Katie Painter led off the inning with a walk and swiped second.
Katelyn Powell reached on an error, allowing Painter to score.
Faith Cooke and
Emily Ayers both walked, but a double play erased Powell. With two down,
Jessica Smith launched a towering three-run homer to make it 4-4.
Flagler plated a run in the top of the seventh and USC Aiken was unable to tie the game in the last of the seventh.
For the contest,
Jessica Stanley had a game-high three hits. Powell added two base knocks while Smith drove in a game-high three RBI.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the first in the nightcap, a throwing error allowed
Brianna Dow to reach safely while Stanley crossed home plate. A fielding error put Ayers on while Powell scored, tying it at 2-2. Smith's single drove in Dow before
Maci Hutto's base hit scored Ayers for a two-run advantage. A wild pitch allowed
Brooke Moore to score from third. When Painter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Smith crossed home for a 6-2 edge.
USC Aiken increased its lead to 9-3 with three more runs in the third. Smith's powerful bat sent a pitch high over the left field wall, driving in Ayers and Moore, who had both reached base moments before.
Flagler scored eight runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-9 lead. However, Poole's squad battled back to take an 11-10 edge.
In the fifth, Cooke walked after coming in as a pinch hitter.
Holly Daum replaced her on first base and moved to second on a Stanley single. Painter laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to push both runners up 60 feet. Powell belted a single to center field, scoring Daum. Dow laid down a bunt, allowing Stanley to hustle home on the play.
The Saints scored a run in the sixth and added six runs in the seventh for the final tally.
For the game, Powell, Smith and Stanley had two hits apiece. Smith led the way with four RBI. Ayers, Moore, Smith and Stanley each scored twice.
The Pacers return to action Saturday, March 27, at 2 p.m., when they host UNC Pembroke.
