WINGATE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team lost a 90-86 decision at Wingate Friday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 7-4 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 10-3.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Tehree Horn's 20 points and nine rebounds.
Preston Parks added 16 points and five assists while
LaTreavin Black accounted for 13 markers.
David Strother chipped in 11 points.
Caleb Furr contributed eight points and five boards while
Samba Ndiaye had six points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Mason McMurray added five points.
Tied at 26-26 with 8:31 to play in the first half, USC Aiken embarked on an 8-0 run. Ndiaye converted an old-fashioned three-point play. McMurray canned a three-ball off a pass from Parks. McMurray took a pass from Black and drained a lay-up for a 34-26 advantage. A pair of free throws from Parks moments later pushed the margin to 38-34 as the visitors would take a 38-37 edge into intermission.
Tied at 61-61 with 7:34 to play,
David Strother nailed a three-point shot. A pair of free throws from Horn moments later made it a 66-63 contest. Down 70-68, Strother found Horn for a shot from distance, giving the Pacers a 71-70 lead. Trailing 75-73 with 22 seconds to go in regulation, Horn was fouled and calmly converted both charity tosses, sending the game into overtime tied at 75-75.
Vanderslice's team led 81-77 with 2:17 to go in the first overtime session after a pair of free throws from Parks. The Bulldogs tied it with 1:07 to go, but neither team could score during the remaining 67 seconds, forcing another extra period.
Down 84-81, McMurray found Horn for a three-point bucket with 2:19 to play. Wingate was fouled with 1:56 to play and made both shots for an 86-84 lead.
USC Aiken trailed 86-84 with 1:56 to go in the second overtime. The squad had a couple chances, but could not convert. Wingate hit a pair of free throws with eight ticks remaining and Horn made a lay-up with two seconds to play. Forced to foul, the Bulldogs hit two free throws for the final margin.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 31-of-72 from the floor (43.1 percent), including 10-of-25 from downtown (40.0 percent). The team held a 49-42 edge on the glass, which helped register 16 second-chance points.
