RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team registered a 76-62 win at St. Augustine's Wednesday evening.
The Pacers are now 4-3 on the season while the Falcons fall to 1-6.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by a game-high 20 points from
Preston Parks. He netted eight-of-10 from the floor, including three-of-five from downtown.
Tehree Horn and
David Strother each accounted for 12 points. The dyad combined to shoot 10-of-17 from the floor. Horn canned a pair of three-point shots and had three steals.
Samba Ndiaye netted eight points while
Jalen McCoy got the starting nod and responded with seven points.
Tyler Johnson chipped in six points while
LaTreavin Black accounted for five points and six boards.
USC Aiken led from the start and never looked back. Parks got things going with a lay-up and a three-ball in the first 1:35. After a free throw from McCoy, Strother nailed three free throws for a 10-0 margin. McCoy hit a jumper and Parks dialed up a long-distance shot for a 15-0 margin.
Leading 19-14, Johnson recorded a steal and lay-up. A pair of charity tosses from
Demitrios Dixon made it 23-14. Up 33-22, Ndiaye threw down a thunderous dunk. Moments later, Vanderslice's squad increased the advantage to 23 when Parks found Strother for a lay-up with 28 ticks on the clock. The Pacers led 45-24 at the break.
It wasn't until 2:53 to play that the Falcons got as close as 18 points (74-56). With just over a minute to go, SAU made it a 14-point game (76-62), but neither team would score the rest of the way.
For the game, Vanderslice's team was outstanding from the field, drilling 30-of-57 (52.6 percent). The squad drained six-of-15 from distance (40.0 percent) and hit 10-of-12 from the charity stripe (83.3 percent).
USC Aiken held a 19-10 advantage in points off turnovers. The squad also maintained a 36-30 margin in the paint.
