Pacers Cruise Past Nighthawks

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team cruised past North Georgia Saturday afternoon by a score of 88-59.

The Pacers are now 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The Nighthawks are 1-1 overall and 1-1 in PBC competition.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was led by Latreavin Black's 19 points and 13 rebounds. For good measure he added a block, an assist and a steal.

Gus Rowland connected for 14 points and seven assists while Jakobi Pearson tallied 12 markers. Anyeuri Castillo and Tyler Johnson chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Castillo had eight boards while Johnson snagged seven.

Tehree Horn and Quincy Canty notched seven points each while Donaven Hairston tallied five.

USC Aiken jumped out to a 14-3 lead after Black hit a jumper off a pass from Castillo with 14:24 to go in the first half and never looked back. The Nighthawks pulled within six at 21-15, but the Pacers pushed the margin to double figures at 29-17 when Hairston found Johnson for a three-ball. USC Aiken extended the margin to 21 on a three-point bucket form Johnson with 2:43 to go in the first half en route to a 44-23 halftime advantage.

Vanderslice's team held a 59-29 edge when Rowland found Castillo for a three-point shot with 13:10 to go. The Pacers maintained a 36-point advantage at 70-34 with just under 10 minutes to play and cruised to the 31-point victory.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 33-of-64 from the floor (51.6 percent), including a 12-of-26 effort from downtown (46.2 percent). The squad buried 10-of-14 from the charity stripe (71.4 percent). Vanderslice's squad held a 15-12 edge in second-chance points and controlled the paint, outscoring the visitors 38-30.
