AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 7-2 decision to No. 18 Georgia College Friday evening.
The Pacers are now 9-7 on the year and 3-7 in league play. The Bobcats stand at 12-1 overall and 8-1 against conference foes.
The visitors pushed across a run in the second, third and fourth frames, taking a 3-0 lead. Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team had two runners on base in the second and third innings, but the squad was unable to push across a run.
In the fourth, USC Aiken loaded the bags.
Eric McGirt walked and stole second before moving to third when
Alex Mills reached on an error. A
Jacob Boyd sacrifice bunt put two in scoring position. With two down,
Trey Polewski was hit by a pitch. However, a fly ball to left field ended the threat.
The Bobcats made it 4-0 in the top of the seventh, but the Pacers plated a run in the bottom half of the frame. Polewski started the inning off with a walk and hustled to second on a base knock by
Sean McQuillan. After USC Aiken hit into a double play that allowed Polewski to scamper to third,
Jackson Hannon singled him home to pull the home squad within 4-1.
GC added three runs in the ninth to make it 7-1. USC Aiken plated a run in the last at bat, but it was not enough. McQuillan laced a double to the right field corner in the bottom of the stanza, scoring
Scott Huntley, who came in as a pinch hitter.
On the mound, Lindsey Robinson, Jr. got the starting nod. He went 5.1 innings and had four strikeouts.
Henry Cartrett tossed 2.2 frames with three strikeouts.
Austin Sandifer started the ninth before
Blake Seigler came in for the final two outs.
At the plate, Hannon and McQuillan shared team-high honors with two hits apiece. Each drove in a run. Huntley and Polewski each scored a run in the loss.
The teams return to action tomorrow for the second game of the series. First pitch is slated at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
