Pacers Take Down Queens In First-Ever Meeting

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team recorded a 6-3 victory over Queens Tuesday evening in the first-ever meeting between the two squads.

The Pacers are now 11-8 on the season while the Royals fall to 4-18.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top with a run in the second and third frames. With two down, Jeff Cyr ripped a single to left field and moved to second when Tyler Littlefield registered a base knock to center field. After swiping third, Cyr scored when Jackson Hannon reached on an error.

Luke Leisenring singled to lead off the third frame. He moved to third moments later. With two away, Scott Huntley's double to the gap allowed him to trot home for a 2-0 lead.

Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Leisenring reached on a single. Two batters later, Alex Mills blasted a double down the right field line. Leisenring hustled around the bags to make it 3-1. Hannon tripled in the seventh and scored on a throwing error for a three-run advantage.

Queens pulled within one at 4-3, but USC Aiken answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Huntley and Jose Hernandez started things off with back-to-back singles. Tai Gilbert came in as a pinch runner for Hernandez and Cyr doubled both home, extending the margin to three, 6-3.

For the game, Leisenring led the way with four hits, including a double. Hannon notched three hits, including a triple. Cyr and Huntley had two hits apiece. Cyr drove in two. Leisenring scored twice.

On the mound, Jacob Boyd worked four innings. He accounted for five strikeouts. Jacob Rye threw 2.1 innings, notching two strikeouts. Adam Hane worked 1.2 innings with two strikeouts. Henry Cartrett came in for the ninth stanza. Rye picked up the victory while Cartrett garnered the save.
