Pacers Fall to Hurricanes

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a hard-fought game by a 10-5 score Saturday afternoon at Georgia Southwestern.

The Pacers are now 8-6 on the season and 2-6 in league play.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team was led by Jacob Boyd, Scott Huntley and Trey Polewski. Each picked up a pair of hits in the game, while Jeff Cyr, Jackson Hannon, Eric McGirt and Sean McQuillan had one hit apiece. Cyr also managed to grab two RBI while Boyd, Polewski, Huntley and Luke Leisenring had one each.

Despite being down 7-0 at the start of the fourth, the Pacers fought hard to stay in the game. With two down, Huntley drew a walk. He didn't stay on first long though, as he was pushed quickly across home by a triple from Boyd to center field making it a 7-1 contest.

After keeping the Hurricanes at bay for two innings, USC Aiken made a comeback push in the top of the sixth. Boyd reached on a fielder's choice that pushed Huntley to second. Both moved forward a bag as Polewski was hit by a pitch. Cyr stepped up and roped a single up the middle to bring both Huntley and Boyd across home and make it 7-3.

The Pacers pushed across another run in the seventh. McGirt singled to left and hurried right past second on to third a throwing error, putting him in perfect position for Leisenring's sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 ballgame.

With GSW managing to pick up three more runs across the seventh and eighth, the Pacers added one more run in the top of the ninth. After Boyd sent a single out to left field and stole second, Polewski bopped a single up the middle to bring him home for the final score.

For the game, Zach Fordham threw the first two innings, Adam Hane came in to pick up one batter and was followed by Joel Haney. He tossed four and one third innings with one strikeout. Will Varnadore and Henry Cartrett finished out the last one and one third innings of the game.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the third and final game of the series starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
