USC Aiken Drops Road Contest At UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team lost a 109-89 decision at UNC Pembroke Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 17-10 overall and 13-4 in league play.

Faison Brock led the way with 20 points on seven-of-15 shooting from the floor. Dhieu Deing netted 19 points while Xzavier Barmore and Damontez Oliver accounted for 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Robert Hill posted eight points and seven rebounds while Gus Rowland chipped in eight markers to go along with a team-best five assists.

In a back-and-forth first half, USC Aiken trailed 17-16 before embarking on a 12-2 run. During the spurt, Kyle Tackeberry converted an inside bucket. Deing buried a three-ball for a 21-17 edge. After a bucket by the Braves, Brock and Deing each converted shots from distance for the eight-point edge.

UNC Pembroke answered with a 14-2 run of its own, but the Braves continued to stay in the game with solid defense. Deing found Barmore for a lay-up at the 3:26 mark, giving the team a one-point lead. After Barmore hit the free throw to complete the three-point play, Rowland recorded a steal and hit the lay-up for a 41-37 lead. The teams traded the lead, but Shaquan Jules nailed a three-point play for a 47-46 advantage. However, the Braves secured a 49-47 halftime edge.

The Pacers tied the game just 15 seconds into the second half on a bucket from Oliver. USC Aiken took the lead when Brock nailed a three-point shot at 52-51. Oliver's basket tied the game at 54-54. The visitors fell behind 61-56, but Oliver's three-point play knotted the score at 62-62 with 15:08 to play.

The Braves answered with a 7-0 run, but USC Aiken continued to inch closer. However, the Pacers were unable to get any closer than two (75-73) the rest of the way. The home team made a late run to break open the game in the closing minutes.

For the game, head coach Mark Vanderslice's team hit 32-of-65 from the floor (49.2 percent) and 16-of-21 from the charity stripe (76.2 percent).
