AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team used a strong defensive performance en route to a 54-47 victory over Augusta Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 11-8 on the year and 6-5 in league play.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Kwajelin Farrar's double-double effort of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Alexis Mack tallied 11 markers while Melyk Taouil contributed 10.

Alex Canady posted five points, four assists and snagged 11 boards in the win.

The Pacers jumped out to a 7-0 lead while holding the visitors scoreless for the first 7:40 of the game. Chesney Gardner hit a lay-up prior to finding Farrar for a 4-0 advantage. Another Gardner lay-up followed by a free throw from Taouil pushed the score to 7-0. However, the Jaguars tied it at 7-7 before the end of the first frame.

Trailing 14-9, Alexis Mack buried a runner in the paint. She hit two free throws moments later before Canady's jumper made it 15-14 for USC Aiken. Farrar and Taouil each hit shots for a 19-14 lead before taking a 19-16 advantage into the break.

The Pacers continued to dominate the third period, taking a 30-19 lead when Canady found Gardner for a lay-up. Miller's team held a 34-25 margin at the end of the stanza.

Augusta took a 40-37 lead on a three-point shot, but Mack came right back and nailed a corner three off a pass from Madison Williams. That sparked a 10-2 run by the home team for a 47-42 advantage. During the run, Canady hit Farrar for a bucket before Farrar found Williams for a three-ball. Up 47-42, Mack made a solid pass to Taouil for a five-point lead.

The Jaguars cut the margin to two, but Farrar made a foul shot. Williams added two more charity tosses for a 50-45 lead. Mack and Farrar nailed foul shots in the final six seconds for the seven-point victory.

For the game, USC Aiken out-rebounded the visitors 53-31. The Pacers dominated the lane, outscoring the Jaguars 32-14. Miller's team also held an 11-5 edge on the break.
