USC Aiken Knocks Off No. 7 Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 6-4 win over No. 7 Newberry Wednesday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 21-17 on the season. The Wolves fall to 33-10.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top of the home squad with a run in the first. Jackson Hannon led off with a single to right field. He moved to second on a groundout before racing to third on a wild pitch. Joey Smithers drove him home with a base knock down the left field line.

USC Aiken extended the margin to 2-0 with a run in the fourth. Philip Watcher reached on a fielder's choice and promptly swiped second base. Two batters later, Scott Huntley ripped a single to center field for the two-run margin.

The Pacers pushed the score to 3-0 with another run in the sixth stanza. Conner Durden walked and moved to second on a base hit from Alex Mills. Watcher reached on a fielder's choice that erased Durden from the base paths. Two batters later, Huntley singled home Mills.

USC Aiken added some insurance in the eighth when Huntley singled in Mills once again. After Huntley stole second, Sean McQuillan ripped a single to center field to plate Huntley.

After the Wolves plated two in the bottom of the eighth to make it 5-2, Thomas' team tacked on a run in the ninth.

Luke Leisenring led off the frame with an infield single before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Smithers. A grounder pushed him to third before Mills rocketed a pitch into left center field for the RBI.

Newberry plated two runs in the ninth, but USC Aiken secured the victory.

For the game, USC Aiken tallied six runs on 10 hits. Huntley and Mills had three hits apiece. Huntley drove in three while Mills scored twice.
