Pacers Drop Series Opener to Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team dropped a 13-3 game against Columbus State Friday evening.

USC Aiken is now 16-11 on the season and 8-5 in league play. The Cougars sit at 18-7 overall and 7-3 in the PBC.

Mitch Spence got the starting nod on the mound, throwing 4.1 innings and striking out three batters.

After a slow start to the game, the Pacers grabbed their first run in the top of the third to tie things up. Jackson Hannon started things off with a lead-off single and was quickly pushed over to second on a ground-out. Joey Smithers then stepped up and smacked a single to the shortstop that gained him first and moved Hannon over to third. A batter later, Luke Leisenring was walked on a full count and was pushed over to second quickly on a walk by Conner Durden that brought Hannon across home to make it 1-1.

Even though the Cougars managed to put up another run in the bottom of the third, USC Aiken fought back with two runs of their own the very next inning. Philip Watcher led-off with a walk and was followed closely after Chandler Rogers was hit by a pitch. The duo managed to execute a double steal to gain second and third, and then Watcher was brought home on a single by Sean McQuillan while Rogers grabbed third. McQuillan then deftly stole second right before Smithers sent a sacrifice fly out to center to bring Rogers home and make it 3-2 for the Pacers.

Despite USC Aiken's best efforts, Columbus State managed to gain five runs in the bottom of the fourth and three each in the bottom of the fifth and seventh to end it 13-3 against the Pacers.

For the game, Smithers had two hits while Durden, Watcher, Rogers, Hannon, McQuillan, Cary Holloway, Scott Huntley and Trey Polewski all picked up one hit each.

On the mound, Zach Lang threw one inning and struck out three while Cameron Nolet worked for 2.2 innings.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow, March 23 as they continue the weekend series against Columbus State at 2 p.m.
