USC Aiken Sweeps Trinity Baptist

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team posted a sweep of Trinity Baptist Saturday by scores of 4-0 and 9-0.

The Pacers are now 7-7 on the season.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team took the first game in part thanks to Hannah Price's dominant pitching performance. Price struck out 11 batters, did not issue a walk and gave up just two singles en route to throwing the complete game.

USC Aiken threatened in the first two frames but did not push across a run until the third. In the third, Katelyn Powell singled and moved to second on a single by Price. Katie Painter doubled, plating Powell.

Powell's single in the fourth scored Courtney Strauss, who had reached on a fielder's choice before swiping second base. The Pacers increased the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Sarah Sams laid down a bunt that scored Painter from third. Sams beat out the throw for a base knock. Two batters later, Leah Boghosian drove in Kathleen St. Peter on a fielder's choice for the final tally.

For the game, Painter went four-for-four with one RBI and a run scored. Boghosian and Powell had two base knocks each. Price and Sams each had one base hit.

In game two, Price smacked a two-run homer to get things started in the bottom of the first. Hanna Hyder doubled home St. Peter for a 3-0 lead. Sarah Sams posted an opposite field hit, driving in Hyder for a 4-0 edge.

Janee McCarthy led off the second with a triple and came home on a double from Boghosian. Strauss smashed a double to center field, plating Boghosian. Powell followed it up with another double for a 7-0 margin.

With two down in the third, McCarthy walked and swiped second base. Boghosian drove her in with a single. USC Aiken tacked on a run in the fourth when Powell scored on a wild pitch. She had reached previously on a triple down the left field line.

For the game, Boghosian and Powell had two hits apiece. Boghosian and Price had two RBI apiece. McCarthy and Powell each crossed home twice.

In the circle, Caroline Cockrell was outstanding. She struck out nine and walked one while giving up just one base hit. She threw a mere 59 pitches in the complete-game win.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they host Limestone at 3 p.m.
