FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team swept a pair of games at Fayetteville State by scores of 12-0 and 10-1.
The Pacers are now 11-9 on the season.
In game one, head coach
Jerry Snyder's team was led by
Courtney Strauss, who pounded out three hits, drove in four runs and scored twice.
Leah Boghosian,
Katie Painter and
Hannah Price had a pair of hits apiece. Price homered, drove in three and scored three times.
Kathleen St. Peter belted a three-run homer.
USC Aiken took a 1-0 lead when Price crossed home as
Sarah Sams reached on an error. Boghosian posted a one-out hit in the second inning and hustled to second. She raced home when Strauss rocketed a single to left field.
Still maintaining a 2-0 lead in the fifth, Strauss singled before swiping second and third. She managed to take her time traveling the next 60 feet as Price lifted the ball over the fence for a two-run homer.
USC Aiken broke open the game with an eight-run sixth inning en route to ending the game early due to the run rule.
In the sixth, Strauss launched a three-run double. Painter singled in Strauss for an 8-0 score. After Painter swiped second and third, Price singled home Painter. With two batters on, St. Peter registered a three-run shot for the 12-0 margin.
Price went the distance in the circle, striking out six for the victory.
In game two, Strauss singled to lead off the game and swiftly stole second. She moved to third on Painter's infield hit. After Painter stole second, Price singled in both runners. With two down,
Caroline Cockrell reached on an error, loading the bases.
Janee McCarthy ripped a double, scoring Price and Sams for a 4-0 advantage.
Boghosian singled and stole second in the top of the second. Strauss doubled her home for a 5-0 lead. With Strauss on third, St. Peter slammed a single to left, driving her in. Price and St. Peter came around to score.
Hanna Hyder, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch, came around to score on an error by the catcher, giving the team a 9-0 lead.
In the fifth, Cockrell singled and was relieved for
Deja Robinson as a pinch runner. With two down, Robinson swiped third before hustling home on a wild pitch. The home team would plate a run in the fifth, but the contest ended early due to the run rule.
For the game, Boghosian and Strauss had two hits apiece. Cockrell drove in four runs while Price and Strauss scored two runs apiece.
Cockrell went the distance, striking out four, to pick up the victory.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they play at St. Augustine in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
