USC Aiken Drops 6-5 Contest To No. 5 Florida Southern

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 6-5 contest to No. 5 Florida Southern Friday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 6-2 on the season while the Mocs are 4-1.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team was led by Chandler Rogers, who drove in a pair of runs. Blake Jenkins registered three hits and Luke Leisenring scored a pair of runs.

With one down in the second inning, Trey Polewski drew a walk and trotted to second when Sean McQuillan was hit by a pitch. Philip Watcher ripped a single to right field with two away, allowing Polewski to race home for a 1-0 advantage.

USC Aiken took a 2-0 edge with a run in the third stanza. Leisenring was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. A fielder's choice erased Conner Durden at third, but a wild pitch a moment later put Pacers on second and third base. McQuillan's base knock gave the Pacers a two-run margin as Leisenring scored on the play.

The Mocs took the lead with a six-run seventh frame.

Despite trailing 6-2, USC Aiken continued to battle. The Pacers threatened to have a huge inning in the bottom half of the frame. With one down, Jenkins belted a single to center field. Rogers singled and an error pushed both runners up a base. Polewski rocketed a hit to center field, scoring Jenkins while making it 6-3. However, Thomas' team was unable to push across anyone else and left two stranded.

After holding the visitors scoreless in the eighth, USC Aiken got things going in its at bat. With two down, Durden reached on an error. He moved to second on Leisenring's base knock to center field. Jenkins' single loaded the bases. Rogers singled home two, bringing USC Aiken within one at 6-5.

Henry Cartrett did a superb job in the ninth while keeping the score at 6-5. McQuillan drew a base on balls to start things off in the last at bat. He swiped second but was left stranded.

For the game, Mitch Spence worked six innings. He gave up six runs, four of which were earned, on five hits. He also struck out four. Jon Yarbrough struck out a batter while Cartrett went 2.2 frames, striking out five.
