Huge First Half Sends USC Aiken Past Flagler

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 7 University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team posted a 91-81 victory at Flagler Wednesday evening.

The Pacers are now 21-2 on the year and 15-2 in the PBC. The Saints are 7-15 overall and 4-12 in league play.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team was led by Ty'lik Evans, who rattled off a game-high 36 points on 13-of-23 shooting. He went eight-for-12 from downtown as well. Evans also had a game-best five steals and a team-high five assists.

Xzavier Barmore netted 20 points on seven-of-13 shooting while Faison Brock accounted for a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. For good measure, Brock also dished out five assists.

Robert Hill snagged nine rebounds while Myles Washington corralled seven. Shaquan Jules stuffed a game-high two blocks.

Trailing 2-0, USC Aiken embarked on an 8-0 run. Doniel Dean hit a free throw before Evans buried a three-ball. Brock hit a pair of free throws and Barmore nailed a jumper for an 8-2 advantage. Leading 11-8, Brock canned a jumper and found Evans for another shot from distance for a 16-8 margin.

Evans found Barmore for a three-point shot, pushing the lead to 11 at 20-9. Barmore hit back-to-back three-pointers and Evans connected on a shot for a 28-9 lead with 11:15 to play in the half. Barmore's old-fashioned three-point play extended the lead to 31-11. With 9:21 to go, Barmore hit Evans for a three-ball and a 36-13 advantage for the visitors.

A flurry by the Saints made it a 14-point game with less than four minutes to go, but Vanderslice's team held a 17-point edge at the break.

With 13:28 to play, Flagler trailed by only five at 57-52. However, Evans quickly answered with a three-ball. A steal by Dean and a lay-up by Brock pushed the advantage to 10. A lay-up by Barmore and a three-point shot from Dean gave the Pacers a 15-point cushion and concluded the 8-0 spurt with a 67-52 lead.

The Saints made it a nine-point contest with 8:43 to play, but that was as close as they would come the rest of the way. As soon as it hit single digits, Jules answered with a lay-up. Evans promptly hit back-to-back shots from downtown for a 76-60 advantage.

The Pacers would push the lead to 21 on a lay-up by Evans with 3:33 to go en route to the 10-point victory.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 34-of-70 from the floor (48.6 percent), including 13-of-26 from downtown (50 percent). The squad held a 43-33 advantage on the glass. The Pacers had 17 second-chance points and 16 fast break points in the contest.

The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play at Georgia Southwestern at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
