No. 18 USC Aiken Downs Belmont Abbey In Season Opener

AIKEN, S.C. – The No. 18 University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis team rolled to a 6-1 win over Belmont Abbey in the season opener for both teams.

In doubles action – which is worth one point now – went to the Pacers with a strong showing. Alex Sklizovic and Alvaro Garcia Gil registered a 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot. The tandem of Antonio Sabugueiro and Salvador Bandeira notched a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 slot to clinch the point. Tales Silva and Vicente Andrades combined for a 6-5 win at the No. 2 position.

Sabugeiro accounted for a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot in singles action for a 2-0 advantage. Silva, playing at the top position, tallied a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Andrades had a tough match, but he prevailed at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Garcia Gil dropped his first set, but bounced back for the win at No. 4. He won by scores of 4-6, 6-4, 10-8, clinching the match.

Leading 5-1, Sklizovic finished things off for head coach Steve Dahm's team with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the No. 6 slot.

The Pacers return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when they travel to Newberry for a match slated to start at 2 p.m.
