SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team defeated Converse Saturday afternoon 64-57.
The Pacers are now 2-2 on the year.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was guided by
Alex Canady's career-high 24 points on seven-of-15 shooting from the floor. She accounted for 10 rebounds for a double-double effort.
Kwajelin Farrar poured in 15 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a game-high four blocks in the victory.
Melyk Taouil chipped in 10 points, five boards and four assists.
Rikoya Anderson notched six points and
Chesney Gardner contributed five.
Down 13-9 after the first quarter, Miller's team embarked on a 14-1 run over the next 3:07 to take a commanding lead. The nine-point edge occurred on a three-ball from Taouil. A three-point shot from
Grace Crawford at the 4:30 mark pushed the advantage to 12 at 28-16, but the home team closed the gap to just five at the break (31-26).
In the third quarter, Canady's old-fashioned three-point play extended the lead to 12 at 40-28. The Pacers made it 44-28 on a lay-up from Chesney with 1:29 to play in the third.
Converse sliced the deficit to three with 2:00 to play but USC Aiken would not let the home team get any closer. Up 60-55 with 10 seconds to go, the visitors connected on four free throws to secure the seven-point victory.
For the game, USC Aiken hit 19-of-55 from the floor and 21-of-31 from the charity stripe. The Pacers outscored the home team 21-12 in points off turnovers.
The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they play at Paine. The game is slated to start at 5:30 p.m.
