JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team defeated Lincoln Memorial 3-1 before falling at Carson-Newman 3-0 Friday on the first day of the PBC Crossover.
The Pacers are now 16-1 on the season.
In the first match of the day, coming against the Railsplitters, head coach
Glenn Cox's team was led by double-double efforts from
Kelsey Spurlin and
Alie Smith. Smith led everyone with 19 kills to go along with 15 digs. Spurlin totaled 10 kills and 14 digs.
Christine Carroll and
Abbey Schad tallied seven kills apiece while
Anita Cookey-Gam accounted for six kills.
Alli Bell dished out a team-high 28 assists while
Mallory Barash and
Rebecca Martinez registered 13 and eight, respectively.
At the service line, Smith sliced the defense for three aces while Bell and Schad had two aces apiece.
Defensively, Martinez led everyone with 24 digs.
Kari Mercer chipped in 11. At the net, Carroll was in on a career-high seven blocks. Cookey-Gam and Schad were each in on two blocks while Barash, Bell, Spurlin and Smith were all credited with a block.
After losing the first set, USC Aiken embarked on a 6-2 spurt to make it 18-10 after a solo stuff from Carroll. LMU battled back to make it 23-20 before an error pushed it to 24-20. Smith found the court on an ace for the 25-20 win.
The third frame was a back-and-forth affair, but the Pacers took the lead for good when Bell found Schad to make it 17-16. Holding a 21-20 advantage, Spurlin hammered home a pass for a kill before dropping back and serving up an ace for a three-point edge. USC Aiken outscored the home team 2-1 over the next three points for the 25-21 victory.
Down 19-17 in the fourth frame, Cox called a time-out. Smith and Spurlin responded with back-to-back kills. Barash served up an ace before Martinez found Schad for a 21-19 lead. After a time-out, Schad and Spurlin posted kills to make it 23-19. Barash found Smith for the final two points in the 25-19 win.
In the nightcap, Smith led the way with 10 kills. Carroll added seven while Spurlin chipped in five.
Barash distributed 11 assists while Bell had eight. Defensively, Martinez led everyone with 17 digs.
The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play Lenoir-Rhyne at 11 a.m., before taking on Mars Hill at 6 p.m. Both matches will be played at Mars Hill. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
