CENTRAL, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team posted a 74-51 victory at Southern Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 7-4 on the season.
Head coach
Mark Miller's team was led by
Kwajelin Farrar's game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. She buried nine-of-12 from the floor. Additionally, Farrar dished out three assists and added two steals.
Grace Crawford netted 14 points while
Kyrie' Chandler connected for 12 points and six assists. Crawford and Chandler each hit four three-point baskets.
Alex Canady and
Star Toomey netted seven points apiece while
Melyk Taouil added six. Taouil distributed five assists while Canady had four.
Chandler got things going with a three-ball just 30 seconds into the contest. However, USC Aiken trailed 9-5 with 6:23 to go in the first. Farrar's lay-up pulled the Pacers within two, sparking a 14-0 run to end the frame. Crawford nailed a three-point shot for a 10-9 edge. Toomey buried a jumper before Chandler found the bottom of the net on a three-pointer. Toomey's lay-up off a pass from Taouil pushed the margin to eight at 17-9.
A lay-up by Farrar made it 23-15 with 4:02 to play, but the Warriors embarked on a 10-0 run. However, Miller's team closed out the half strong.
Madeline Sexton found Farrar for an inside shot with 1:14 to play, knotting the contest at 25-25. After a strong defensive stand, Sexton snagged the defensive board. On the ensuing possession, Chandler found Crawford for a three-ball and a 28-25 lead at the break.
A 16-0 spurt by the Pacers to start the third quarter broke the game wide open. Miller's squad outscored the home team 30-13 in the stanza. The 30-point effort marked the fourth-most points scored in a quarter – and the second-most points scored by the team in the third quarter - in USC Aiken history.
Farrar started the scoring with a basket. Chandler nailed a three-pointer before Crawford and Canady connected on shots for a 38-25 lead. Chandler answered with another shot from downtown for a 41-25 edge.
After the home squad scored a basket, Canady and
Sade Johnson each connected. Taouil's shot from distance pushed the margin to 21 at 48-27 with 4:29 to go in the frame. A three-pointer by
Madison Williams extended the advantage to 23 at 54-31. The squad maintained a 58-38 lead heading into the fourth.
The Pacers pushed the margin back to 23 points on a three-point shot from Crawford at the 6:57 mark of the final quarter. USC Aiken's stingy defense did not allow the home team any closer than 19 the rest of the way.
For the game, Miller's team hit 30-of-68 from the floor (44.1 percent), including 12-of-34 from downtown (35.3 percent). The team converted 22 turnovers into 26 points.
