PBC Championship Bid Comes Up Short

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team put forth an outstanding effort in the PBC Tournament and PBC Championship game, but the squad lost a 7-5 contest to Georgia College Sunday afternoon.

The Pacers conclude the season with a record of 35-19 while the Bobcats improve to 43-10.

After falling behind 3-0 through the first three frames of work, head coach Kenny Thomas' team plated a run in the fourth.

With one down, Nile Goings ripped a double to center field. Two batters later, he raced home on a base knock from Joey Smithers.

Trailing 5-1 in the seventh, USC Aiken scored a run. Conner Durden was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a single from Smithers. Philip Watcher singled down the left field line, pushing Durden across home plate. Although the Pacers were threatening to cut into the deficit even more, three straight outs ended the stanza.

Down 6-2 in the eighth, Daulton Weeks singled on an 0-1 count to lead off the frame. With two down, Durden liked the first pitch he saw and promptly launched it over the right center field fence, bringing USC Aiken within two at 6-4.

After the Bobcats scored a run in the eighth, USC Aiken once again battled back. Watcher led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. A single from Chandler Rogers pushed him to third base, putting runners on the corners. Jose Bonilla lifted a fly ball to right field, plating Watcher on the sacrifice.

Weeks roped a 1-0 pitch to right field, putting Pacers on first and third base with two away. However, a groundout ended the contest.

For the game, Bonilla, Rogers, Smithers and Weeks had two hits apiece. Durden drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.

USC Aiken is now 2-2 in PBC Championship games, having won in 1992 and 1993 before dropping the title contest in 2007.
