AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team split a pair of games at Augusta Sunday afternoon, winning 7-2 before falling 2-1.
The Pacers are now 11-29 on the season and 3-9 in league play.
In the opener, head coach
Jerry Snyder's team jumped on top with two runs in the first and never looked back.
Katelyn Powell led off the game with a single and moved to second on a groundout.
Chandler Terrapin ripped a single down the left field line, making it 1-0.
Sydney Kate Murphy singled to left, putting runners on the corners.
Jessica Stanley's single up the middle made it 2-0.
In the fourth Terrapin drew a two-out walk before Murphy blasted an offering high over the left center field fence for a 4-0 advantage.
After the Jaguars pulled within two at 4-2 in the fourth, Snyder's team quickly answered. Strauss roped a pitch to center field for a double. Two batters later, Terrapin rocketed a pitch over the left center field wall for a 6-2 lead.
USC Aiken would make it 7-2 in the seventh. Powell tripled to center field and scored on a wild pitch for the final tally.
For the game, Murphy, Powell, Stanley and Terrapin recorded two hits apiece. Terrapin drove in three while Murphy had two RBI. Stanley chipped in with one RBI. Terrapin crossed home three times while Powell trotted across the plate twice.
Caroline Cockrell went the distance for the win. She struck out four while giving up two earned runs on four hits.
In the nightcap, USC Aiken took a 1-0 lead in the fourth.
Hannah Price doubled to the gap in right center field and moved to third on a Terrapin fly ball. Murphy reached on a fielder's choice as Price slid under the tag.
The Pacers stranded a runner in the fourth, fifth and two in the sixth as the score remained at 1-0. The home team managed to plate the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
For the game, Price and
Kristan Lowery had two hits apiece.
Brielle Jungblut, Powell and Terrapin each had a base knock.
