Pacers Clinch Sweep With Win Over Jaguars

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team registered a 6-0 victory over Augusta Sunday afternoon.

Christian Aragon got the starting nod on the mound. Through eight innings of work, he gave up five hits and walked none while striking out nine. Aragon held the Jaguars off from scoring entirely in the shutout.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team took the lead early on, putting up two runs in the top of the first. Jose Bonilla led off with a double down the left field line and was brought home for the first run on a double by Daulton Weeks. Weeks promptly moved to second on a fly out by Brian Parreira and then was driven in when Conner Durden singled up the middle, making it 2-0 for the Pacers.

Things were fairly quiet on both sides until the Pacers  brought another two home in the top of the fourth. Durden singled to left to start things off, followed closely by Brady O'Neil singling to right to get on base and push Durden all the way to third. On a ground out by Philip Watcher, Durden came home and O'Neil advanced to second, where he promptly moved to third on a passed ball. A batter later, Chandler Rogers brought O'Neil home on a single to center to make it a 4-0 ball-game.

Both teams held each other at bay for another for another four innings, until USC Aiken decided to add two more to the board in the top of the ninth. One batter in, Joey Smithers singled to center field and then promptly stole second. Then Rogers stepped up to the plate and placed a bunt perfectly for a single that pushed Smithers to third. Bonilla proceeded to reach on a fielder's choice that went awry, moving Rogers to third and allowing Smithers to score on an error. After Bonilla was caught stealing for the second out, Weeks singled down the left side to  bring Rogers home for the final run of the game, making it 6-0 in the Pacers favor.

For the game, Weeks, Durden and Rogers all had three hits. O'Neil registered two, and Bonilla and Smithers had one hit apiece. Christian Aragon walked away with the win.

On the mound, Blake Seigler came in to close out the game, striking out one and giving up no hits or walks.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday night as they host Wingate at 6 p.m.
