USC Aiken Races Past Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Caroline Aiken baseball team cruised to a 14-4 win at Augusta Friday evening.

The Pacers are now 22-13 on the season, including a 13-6 ledger in league play.

Head coach Kenny Thomas' team jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first. With one down, Daulton Weeks walked and jogged to second when Brian Parreira was hit by a pitch. A walk to Brady O'Neil loaded the bases.

Conner Durden singled in Weeks for a 1-0 lead. After a fielder's choice erased Parreira, Philip Watcher earned a walk, plating O'Neil for the two-run advantage.

In the second, Chandler Rogers walked, moved to second on a groundout and hustled to third on a wild pitch. Weeks singled him home before racing to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Parreira ripped a single to right, scoring Weeks. Two batters later, Durden singled home Parreira. Smithers pushed the score to 6-0 when A fielder's choice allowed Durden to cross home plate.

The Jaguars pulled within four by scoring two in the bottom of the fourth. However, Thomas' team kept a wide margin over the home squad. In the seventh, Watcher singled home O'Neil, who had reached via a leadoff single up the middle.

O'Neil singled home Weeks in the eighth for the six-run advantage (8-2). With the bases loaded, Watcher reached on an error by the left fielder as O'Neil and Durden each scored. LaVale Hodges singled home Smithers and Watcher, pushing the lead to 10 at 12-2.

Watcher struck again in the ninth, doubling home O'Neil. Sean McQuillan singled in Durden, making it 14-3.

For the game, Zach Rafuse worked six frames, striking out five en route to earning the victory. Daniel Wiggins tossed a scoreless seventh, striking out one.

At the plate, Durden led the way with a four-for-four effort. He drove in two and scored three times. O'Neil had three hits and crossed home four times. Watcher and Weeks had two hits apiece. Watcher drove in five while Hodges had two RBI. Weeks scored three times.
