AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of games to Wingate Thursday afternoon by scores of 7-0 and 3-1.
The Pacers are now 7-15 on the season.
In the opener, USC Aiken had a pair of hits.
Hannah Price and
Chandler Terrapin each garnered base knocks. Stellar defensive plays by the visitors and a head-strong wind stopped a few more opportunities by the home team.
Lyndie Dorgan started and went four innings, giving up four earned runs. She struck out three.
Caroline Cockrell had three strikeouts in relief.
Head coach
Jerry Snyder's team trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the third, but bounced back to knot the score at 1-1.
Leah Boghosian beat out an infield bunt on the first pitch of the frame.
Sarah Sams – who had an outstanding day in the field – dropped a sacrifice bunt, pushing Boghosian to second. On just the third pitch of the stanza,
Brielle Jungblut ripped an opposite field single to left center field. The base hit allowed Boghosian to score as Jungblut moved to second on the throw.
Courtney Strauss reached base on an error to put two runners on, but the Pacers were unable to push another run across in the frame.
Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Terrapin singled to the shortstop.
Hannah Price singled, allowing Terrapin to move to second.
Katelyn Powell and
Deja Robinson came in as pinch runners, but neither could move as USC Aiken was retired in order the rest of the inning.
Sams doubled with two down in the seventh, but an outstanding defensive play ended the game.
For the night, Jungblut singled and drove in one. Terrapin, Price,
Kathleen St. Peter, Boghosian and Sams all had hits. Boghosian scored the team's lone run.
The Pacers return to action Sunday when they open league play at Flagler. The doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m.
