USC Aiken Drops Doubleheader At Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a pair of contests at Georgia Southwestern by scores of 7-1 and 6-5 (9 innings).

The Pacers are now 8-22 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team trailed 1-0 in the second frame, but battled back to knot it at 1-1 in the opener.

In the top of the fourth, Sydney Kate Murphy singled through the left side of the infield with two down. Sarah Sams followed it up with a base knock to center field. With runners moving on contact, Brielle Jungblut ripped a pitch up the middle, plating Murphy for the 1-1 score.

GSW managed to score three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, for the 7-1 win.

For the game, Jungblut and Murphy each had two hits. Leah Boghosian, Caroline Cockrell and Courtney Strauss all added hits.

In the nightcap, USC Aiken jumped on top with two runs in the first stanza. Boghosian singled to second base and swiped second before managing to take her time coming home when Hannah Price blasted a towering round-tripper over the left field wall.

The Lady Canes pulled within one in the bottom of the inning, but Snyder's squad plated two more runs for a 4-1 lead in the third.

Jessica Stanley singled to left field to lead things off. She hustled to second when Boghosian recorded a base hit to second base. Price reached on a fielder's choice, eliminating Stanley on the play.

Murphy blasted a double to center field, scoring Boghosian while Price scampered to third. With two down, Chandler Terrapin singled to the shortstop, allowing Price to race home for a 4-1 advantage.

GSW scored two runs in the bottom of the frame and tied it in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.

USC Aiken struck with a run in the eighth. Kristan Lowery recorded a one-out double down the left field line. She moved to third when Jungblut doubled through the left side of the infield. Stanley lifted an offering down the right field line that was caught in foul territory for a sacrifice fly. The ball was deep enough for Lowery to slide in safely for the 5-4 lead.

The home squad tied it in bottom of the inning and recorded a one-out single for the game-winner in the ninth.

For the game, Jungblut led the way with three hits. Price registered a pair of hits, including the two-run homer. Boghosian notched two hits and scored twice. Lowery, Murphy, Katelyn Powell, Stanley, Strauss and Terrapin each registered hits.

The Pacers return to action Sunday when they play at Columbus State. The doubleheader is slated to start at 2 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at PacerSports.com.
