AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team cruised to a 21-4 victory over Emmanuel Tuesday evening in a non-conference affair while
Brian Parreira hit for the cycle.
The Pacers are now 10-4 on the season while the Lions fall to 5-9.
Parreira was four-for-five at the plate with six RBI and three runs scored. He registered a grand slam, a triple, double and a single in the win.
Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. The squad added a run in the second and three more in the third for a 6-0 edge. After not scoring a run in the fourth, USC Aiken broke the game wide open with a nine-run fifth. Subsequently, the team added a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh stanzas.
Jose Bonilla scored the first run of the contest on a balk. With
Joey Smithers on second base,
Conner Durden smacked a single to right field for a 2-0 margin.
Nile Goings opened the second with a solo blast over the left field wall for a 3-0 score.
Durden recorded a solo shot in the fourth. Two batters later, Parreira tripled home
Daulton Weeks. Then, Parreira raced home on a wild pitch, making the score 6-0.
In the nine-run fifth, the frame was highlighted by a grand slam from Parreira for a 14-0 lead. Two pitches later, Goings smashed his second round-tripper of the season.
Durden and Parreira each doubled home runs in the sixth for a 17-1 advantage. Smithers knocked in
Chris Schwarzer and
LaVale Hodges in the seventh.
Despite leading 19-2, USC Aiken offense continued to shine. Hodges singled home
Saige Benson in the eighth. Two batters later,
Philip Watcher plated
Chris Girken, who had reached on a single earlier in the inning.
For the game, Bonilla, Durden and Goings had three hits apiece. Durden drove in three while Goings, Smithers and Watcher had two RBI apiece.
Bonilla, Durden and Goings all crossed home three times apiece while Schwarzer and Weeks trotted across home plate twice each.
On the mound,
Brooks Calvo got the starting nod and struck out a batter.
Jacob Rye worked two frames and had two strikeouts.
Henry Cartrett,
William Ard and
Will Varnadore had a strikeout apiece.
Jordan Brown and
Jarod McElyea each struck out two batters in an inning of work.
With a predetermined rotation, Calvo picked up his first win of the season.
