USC Aiken Comes Up Short At UNC Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team lost a 58-49 contest at UNC Pembroke Wednesday afternoon.

The Pacers are now 6-19 overall and 3-16 against league foes.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was paced by Kyrie' Chandler's 11 markers. Marissa Bruce and Sade Johnson added eight points apiece while Phenicia Howard chipped in seven. Star Toomey snagged a game-high 12 rebounds. She also swatted a pair of shots.

Trailing 6-0 at the start of the game, USC Aiken got on the board with a jumper from Bruce at the 5:40 mark. Bruce hit another shot before Star Toomey's lay-up knotted the score at 6-6. Celine Vega's three-ball with 1:17 to play in the first knotted the score at 11-11.

The Braves made it 22-15 with 3:37 to go in the first half, but Miller's team got back within three when Chandler nailed a three-pointer. However, the home squad managed to go up by six, 29-23, at the break.

Down by six at 33-27, Toomey and Bruce connected for buckets, making it a two-point game with 4:24 to go in the third quarter. UNC Pembroke would embark on a nine-point run before Howard quelled the crowd with a three-ball to end the scoring in the period, making it 42-34.

USC Aiken trailed by as many as 18 in the fourth before the visitors whittled the score to 11 after baskets by Sade Johnson and Chandler with 2:10 to play. Neither team scored for over two minutes before Bruce canned a jumper with eight seconds to play off a pass from Melyk Taouil for the final tally.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 20-of-60 from the floor (33.3 percent), including six-of-27 from downtown &22 percent). The squad got to the foul line just five times, hitting three attempts (60 percent).

Miller's team tallied 12 points off UNC Pembroke's 10 turnovers. The visitors controlled the glass, 41-33. USC Aiken outscored the home team 18-10 in the paint.
