Pacers Outrun Hurricanes, 59-54

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken women's basketball team registered a 59-54 win over Georgia Southwestern

The Pacers are now 6-17 on the season, including a 3-14 record in the PBC.

Head coach Mark Miller's team was led by Kyrie' Chandler's 18 points. Sade Johnson added 10. Star Toomey snagged 14 rebounds while Phenicia Howard grabbed 10.
 
The Pacers jumped out to a big lead, outscoring the Hurricanes 20-8 in the first quarter. In the opening stanza, Howard's jumper pushed the score to 9-2 at the 5:01 mark. The lead was extended to 11 on Marissa Bruce's jumper less than a minute later. Holding a 17-8 advantage, Celine Vega nailed a three-ball to close out the scoring off a pass from Lonesha Lee.

Although the team was outscored in the second quarter, the Pacers carried the lead into halftime by a score of 33-28.

The Hurricanes were able to regain the lead as the Pacers fell behind to end the third quarter 41-38.

However, a solid team effort from the Pacers saw the team outscore the Hurricanes 21-13 and pick up the win 59-54.

Trailing 43-40 less than a minute into the final stanza, Sade Johnson buried a jumper off a pass from Howard. Kyrie' Chandler's three-ball gave USC Aiken a 45-43 edge. Melyk Taouil netted a pair of charity tosses at the 7:05 mark for a five-point edge.

The visitors knotted the score at 48-48 and the teams battled back-and-forth over the next few minutes of play. Chandler's free throws with 1:19 to go made it 54-52 in favor of the home team. Bruce hit a free throw as did Chandler with under 30 seconds to play for a 56-52 edge. Howard was fouled with 14 seconds to go and made a pair, giving the home team some breathing room. Johnson finished off the Hurricanes with a free throw at the eight-second mark for the final tally.

For the game, USC Aiken hit 19-of-50 from the floor (38 percent), including seven-of-18 from the three-point stripe (38.9 percent).
