AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken baseball team lost a 13-7 decision to Shepherd Saturday afternoon in the series finale.
Hunter Shuff got the starting nod on the mound. Through two innings of work, he gave up six hits and walked two while striking out two.
Head coach
Kenny Thomas' team lost the lead early on after Shepherd plated four runs in the top of the second, then added five more in the third.
The Pacers started to fight back in the bottom of the fourth.
Jose Bonilla started off by hitting a single to center field, followed by
Joey Smithers blasting a double in the same direction to quickly bring Bonilla home. Smithers advanced to third on a ground out by
Daulton Weeks and then was plated by a single from
Brian Parreira. Though there were a few more hits in the inning, the Pacers didn't manage to score any more in the frame.
USC Aiken battled back even further in the bottom of the fifth, picking up four more runs.
Chandler Rogers singled to get on base and was promptly brought home by Bonilla's home run. Smithers then singled and advanced to second on a single by Weeks. Parreira pushed Smithers to third on a fly out and
Conner Durden hit a sacrifice fly to bring Smithers home and make it 9-6. Two batters later,
Blake Bottomley flied out to center.
Despite the Pacers' best efforts, the Rams plated one more in the top of the sixth to make it 10-6.
In the bottom of the seventh, USC Aiken plated its last run of the game when
Nile Goings reached on a passed ball from a strike out, advanced to second on
Philip Watcher's ground out and then to third on a wild pitch. Goings was brought home on another wild pitch.
Shepherd managed to pick up two more runs in the top of the eighth and one more in the top of the ninth.
For the game, Bonilla and Smithers had three hits apiece while Weeks and Watcher registered two hits each. Parreira, Durden, Goings and Rogers also each earned a hit. Shuff picked up the loss.
On the mound,
Mitch Spence worked three innings while giving up two runs, walking two and striking out three.
Daniel Wiggins tossed two innings and struck out two while giving up one run. Jon Yarborough and
Blake Seigler worked one inning apiece, with Yarborough giving up two runs and Seigler one, while both struck out two.
The Pacers return to action Wednesday, Feb. 14 at Wingate at 3 p.m.
