Barmore Sets School Record In Win Over Paine

AIKEN, S.C.Xzavier Barmore dished out a Division II school record 14 assists in the University of South Carolina Aiken's 79-64 victory over Paine Saturday afternoon.

The No. 12 Pacers are now 9-0 overall while the Lions fall to 1-7. The team's 9-0 mark ties the program's best start (2007-08) in the Division II era.

Barmore accounted for a double-double with 14 assists and 12 points. Faison Brock led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds while Doniel Dean added 16 points, four assists and two rebounds.

Robert Hill controlled the paint, tallying seven points, eight rebounds and swatting three shots. Shaquan Jules totaled eight points and three boards while Ty'lik Evans accounted for six points, four assists and four steals.

Kyle Tackeberry chipped in five points and four boards while Darius Bell and Myles Washington added two points apiece.

Head coach Mark Vanderslice's team jumped out to a 6-0 lead 1:30 into the game and never looked back. Evans got things going on a three-ball before finding Dean for an old-fashioned three-point play.

The Pacers extended the lead to 15-3 after embarking on a 7-0 run. Tackeberry hit a three-ball, Brock threw down a thunderous dunk and Barmore converted a lay-up for the 12-point margin.

Despite leading 28-14 on a free throw by Hill, USC Aiken saw its lead dwindle to five with 2:09 to go in the half. However, Dean hit a lay-up and Barmore made a foul shot for a 37-29 advantage at the break.

Dean started the second half scoring on a lay-up, making it 39-29. After Paine made it 42-33 with 17:04 to play, the Pacers pushed the lead to double figures and never allowed the visitors closer than 10 the rest of the way.  

For the game, USC Aiken scorched the nets, hitting 34-of-63 from the floor (54.0 percent). The team hit five-of-21 from downtown (23.8 percent) and six-of-13 from the charity stripe (46.2 percent).

Vanderslice's team held a 36-33 advantage on the glass and dished out 26 assists compared to 14 by the visitors. USC Aiken converted 16 turnovers into 27 points and led from start to finish. The home squad outscored the Lions 54-28 in the paint and amassed 30 fast break points on the night.
