GREENWOOD, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's basketball team remained unbeaten on the road with a 96-72 win at Lander Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 10-5 overall and 7-4 in league play. The Bearcats fall to 6-11 overall and 2-9 in conference action.
Head coach
Mark Vanderslice's team was led by
Markus Terry's game-high 25 points on nine-of-12 shooting, including four-of-six from distance.
Kyle Tackeberry poured in a career-high 16 points on six-of-nine shooting from the field.
Faison Brock added 13 points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds.
Doniel Dean and
Robert Hill added 12 and 11 markers, respectively. The dyad combined to go 10-of-15 from the floor.
Paris Ballinger and
Austin Grimes chipped in seven points apiece while
Henry Bolton III added five points.
Dean dished out five assists while Ballinger and Bolton III totaled four and three, respectively.
Trailing 5-4 in the opening moments, Terry made a lay-up and Dean drained a three-ball off a pass from Terry for a quick 9-5 advantage. Leading 10-7, Dean made a lay-up and Terry hit a three-pointer for a 15-7 edge and USC Aiken would never look back. A Grimes jumper pushed the lead to double figures at the 12:35 mark.
The Bearcats trimmed the lead to seven, but Vanderslice's team never let it get closer. Grimes nailed another shot from distance at the 5:48 mark, giving the visitors a 36-22 advantage. After a thunderous slam by Hill, Bolton III canned two charity tosses for a 46-26 edge with 2:41 to play in the opening stanza. Ballinger found Hill for another dunk late in the period as the Pacers maintained a 53-28 lead at the break.
Leading by 20 at 53-33, Dean and Brock hit shots, starting a 12-0 spurt by USC Aiken. During the run, Terry added five points while Brock chipped in four. Hill rattled the rim with another dunk, pushing the margin to 32 at 67-35 with 16:08 to play.
Tackeberry gave the Pacers their biggest lead of the contest up to that point on a three-ball off a pass from
Darius Bell with 4:19 to play. The three-ball pushed the score to 90-56. With 2:37 to go, Brock's lay-up made it 94-59 for the largest lead of the game.
For the game, USC Aiken nailed 36-of-62 from the floor (58.1 percent), including a 12-of-26 effort from downtown (46.2 percent). Vanderslice's team forced 15 turnovers and converted the miscues into 18 points. USC Aiken held a 36-33 advantage on the glass and dished out 19 assists compared to 11 by the home team.
